The Written Word

One of the earliest practices of man was writing. We have historical transcripts that date back centuries.

The oral word was used to carry story after story from fathers to children. But oral accounts can falter and vary. If you have ever played the childhood game of Gossip, then you know that when a phrase is first said, by the time it reaches the last ear, it has no resemblance to the original phrase.

The written word however was forever held in its original state. The craft of writing was once a painstakingly difficult and laborious process, unlike today. Care was taken, not only with each word, phrase, or paragraph, but with each letter.

As the written word progressed, it also became an art form. Drop-caps which often started a new chapter or page, were miniature works of art which took time with crude tools to create.

Fast-forward many years and we find society devastated to see governments ripping books from homes and burning them, their words forever lost.

In our age of electronics, it is hard to imagine the time and care it once took to write down even the most simple story, and the devastation felt by those who saw their beloved stories go up in flames.

Let us never, no matter how technology brings ease to our lives, forget the journey the written word has taken to get to this place to educate, entertain, and inspire us all!
